A special place with a long history

Hosts who love to welcome you

A simple farmhouse was built on this site over 500 years ago and was mentioned in records for the first time in 1573 as “Hof Oberhaus”. In 1670 it was purchased by the tenant farmer at Steinwend, Bartholomaeus Trenker. The farm flourished and, through tireless hard work, was passed on from one generation to the next right until the present day.

Post-war period

The beginning of a new era

In the 1960s, Alois and Frida Trenker set up the first four guest rooms on their self-sufficient farm. They were simple rooms with a shared bathroom, as was usual at the time. The hot water for the bathroom was heated from the kitchen stove using a serpentine heating system and fuelled by wood from our own forest, just as it is today. Step by step, more grew out of the decision to take in holidaymakers over the summer months - by 1962 there were nine rooms already, and by working with neighbouring guesthouses, it was possible to accommodate small groups too.

The picture shows an old family photograph of the Trenker family.

From father to son

Anton Trenker takes over

In 1979, Anton Trenker and his wife Waltraud took over the running of the establishment from his parents and extensively modernised it. Soon it was no longer possible to combine rearing cattle with taking care of guests at the same time. And so, the decision was made to concentrate fully on hosting guests. In 1984 Anton was able to officially call his business a “Pension”. For every room there was now an individual bathroom. A dining room was built with a table for each room instead of communal tables. Then, in 2001, the decision was made to undertake a further rebuild with larger rooms, a hotel bar and a sauna complex to complete the offering of what was now a three-star establishment.

Time to pass the business on again

Alexander takes over

In 2008, a new chapter began with Alexander. Sustainability became an established part of the business, with a woodchip heating system fuelled by wood from our own forest and a photovoltaic plant. Over time, new rooms, an extended dining room and larger wellness facilities have come along. And since 2017 we have been a member of the Wanderhotels chain.

The advent of a fourth star

A new philosophy for a new era

In 2019 the business was awarded a fourth star. Now we have made it our mission to enable our guests to experience this unique place – the Prags Valley, Lake Prags, Plätzwiese and the Dolomites. And at the same time to protect this natural wonder. The guided hikes are one of our highlights. We have also created a fallow deer reserve with a pond and an observation post and we have renovated the old building.
