Tips for beginners

What you need for hiking – equipment

Hiking boots

Good grips, waterproof, ankle high, breathable and worn in. Plus, suitable hiking socks. Wear your boots in at home, otherwise your hiking tour may become “torture” with blistered feet.

Clothing

Choose clothing that you can wear in layers: breathable underwear that dries quickly, hiking shirt and trousers, a warming layer (e.g. a fleece or soft-shell jacket) and a wind and water-repellent jacket. A shirt to change into should also be in your rucksack, plus a sun hat, gloves and scarf.

Sunscreen

The mountain sunshine packs a punch, so sun cream is sensible even in cloudy weather, and an absolute must in full sun. A head covering that also covers the neck will protect you from sunstroke. And a high-quality pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes.

Rucksack and hiking sticks

An ergonomically shaped rucksack and hiking sticks are waiting for you in your room. You can use this equipment free of charge for the duration of your stay. When packing it, remember that every kilogram counts. The hiking sticks will be especially useful when descending and will protect your joints.

Provisions

Always take something to eat with you on your daytrip, for example fruit, an energy bar, sandwich and glucose tablets. Also take a water bottle with sufficient water, but at least 1 l per person – and more if you are planning a long hike with nowhere to stop for a drink or snack.

Hiking map and mobile phone

Always take a good hiking map of the region with you, then your battery will never run out and you will be able to find your way home, even if you have taken a wrong turn. Apart from this, a fully charged mobile is useful if you need to make a call in case of emergency.

Bag for litter

Any litter, including paper tissues and leftover fruit, should be disposed of properly. Bring all of your litter back to the hotel with you and we will dispose of it for you.

First-aid kit

A small box should contain your personal medication, replacement glasses or contact lenses, various sizes of plaster, blister plasters, wound cleaning wipes, sterile dressings, compresses, gauze bandages, a roll of tape, scissors, single-use gloves, a triangular scarf, survival blanket (gold/silver foil).

Will I actually be able to manage it?
