Feel nature up close in winter

Back-country skiing in the Prags Dolomites

Your breath comes out in clouds, your skins are strapped on, your skis are on your feet and away you go – the summits and natural wonders of the Dolomites are just waiting to be explored. The climb to the top is followed by pure delight – wedeling down the mountainside over untouched powder snow! If the snow conditions are good enough you can begin your back-country skiing adventure right outside the hotel.

Snow-covered mountain landscape with wooded cliffs and several houses, one with illuminated windows, under a pink sky.

Why are we the right hotel for your back-country skiing adventure in the Dolomites?

Five reasons to choose the Hotel Trenker

  1. Because we are really close to the starting points of the best back-country skiing routes in the area.

  2. Because we offer a ski cellar, boot dryer, washing facilities for your skis and even washing and drying facilities for your laundry.

  3. Because, as a certified hiking hotel we know precisely what our back-country skiers need and want.

  4. Because after your day in the snow you’ll be able to treat yourself to a touch of wellness in our pool and saunas.

  5. Because we provide you with delicious treats from breakfast until dinner.

Has to be right: assessment, planning, equipment

Stay on the safe side

Because safety always takes precedence in the mountains, belting on and activating your avalanche transceiver and carrying a shovel and probe in your rucksack are a must. But it is at least as important to plan your trip in keeping with the weather conditions and the current avalanche report. If you are not certain, the best thing to do is have an expert from the Puster Valley Alpine School, Sexten Alpine School or Globo Alpin accompany you.

Our tour tips

To help you immerse yourself immediately in our winter wonderland on a morning right outside our hotel, we are pleased to present some of the loveliest back-country skiing routes in Prags:

Plätzwiese back-country skiing tour

Distance: 10.3 km / Altitude difference: 510 m / Level of difficulty: easy

Your tour up to the Plätzwiese begins from the Alpengasthof Brückele – a real winter wonderland consisting of unspoilt nature and breathtaking mountain panorama presents itself to you here, at the heart of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park. Once you arrive at the top, take a break, treat yourself to something to eat and drink, and enjoy!

Dürrenstein back-country skiing tour

Distance: 8.4 km / Altitude difference: 860 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

The higher you climb, the more the renowned Dolomite summits show themselves at their best. You can see the Sexten Dolomites with the Three Peaks, the Ampezzo Dolomites with the Cristallo massif, Seekofel, and on clear days even Ortler and in the north, Grossvenediger and Grossglockner, to mention just a few. On your back country skis, you can cross ridges and cols before finally reaching the 2839 m high summit!

Seekofel back-country skiing tour

Distance: 12.9 km / Altitude difference: 1450 m / Level of difficulty: hard

Seekofel rises high above the legendary Lake Prags and offers spectacular views of the lake lying 1300 metres below as well as over the entire Sennes plateau. The back-country skiing tour to the Seekofel is among the rather more difficult tours in the Upper Puster Valley, but rewards all of your efforts with fabulous vistas.

Grosser Jaufen back-country skiing tour

Distance: 13.6 km / Altitude difference: 1000 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

You might think that in itself the Grosser Jaufen is nothing special – an unassuming mountain-top with no summit cross. But you would be very wrong, since what it lacks in terms of appearance, it makes up for when it comes to views – in this respect it is really one of the greats! You can also extend your tour and go on to explore both the Grosser and Kleiner Jaufen.

Helltaler Schlechten – Grosse Pyramide back-country skiing tour

Distance: 7.3 km / Altitude difference: 730 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

At the heart of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park lies one of the loveliest summit crosses in the Upper Puster Valley – the Helltaler Schlechten, also known as Grosse Pyramide. In winter in particular, the summits are especially popular among back-country skiers and snowshoers. The exertion required to ascend is rewarded with a 360º view.
