Tips and fascinating facts

Frequently asked questions about the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 1

Do I need to be fit?

Yes, a long-distance hike is not for the inexperienced. You should have mountain and hiking experience and be used to regular intensive sporting activity so that you are able to manage climbs of up to 1000 metres altitude difference and distances of 20 km at a time.

Which months are best for a long-distance hike?

The months during which the huts are open, normally from the beginning of June until the end of September.

How long in advance do I need to book the huts?

It is recommended that you make reservations at least 6 months to sometimes 1 year in advance. The huts only have limited beds, for which reason it is essential to book in good time. It is not advisable to book “last minute”, as the huts are usually already fully booked.

What kind of accommodation do the huts offer?

The majority of huts offer simple accommodation in the form of dormitories with communal bathrooms. Due to the altitude of the huts and the shortage of water that often goes with that, water is usually rationed and the time for showering is limited.

Do the huts offer something to eat and drink?

There is usually simple, plain fare with typical local dishes available from the huts. You can also purchase water and drinks for the hike there.

Where can I park my car and leave my belongings?

As our hotel guest you can park your car in our car park for the duration of your hike and we will look after your luggage in the meantime for a charge.

Am I able to work online from the huts and can I pay by credit card?

No, many huts are located well away from the mobile phone network and wireless internet. For this reason, it is only possible to pay by cash in many huts. Tip: a power bank for quickly charging your mobile phones is very useful.

If there is no mobile network in the mountains, how can I find out where I am?

Always take an analogue, traditional hiking map with you so that you can pinpoint your location in areas without a mobile signal.

In summer its always pleasantly warm in the mountains, right?

No, the mountains are unpredictable, with cold snaps being possible at any time, meaning that it can even snow in summer. For this reason, you should check the weather report carefully and prepare accordingly: In hot weather you will need more drinking water than usual and very good protection from the sun. In cool and cold temperatures, you will need warm clothing, gloves and a scarf.

How do I get back to the hotel?

The return journey can be completed by public transport.

Can I also do this hike in winter?

No, as many sections are at risk from avalanches.
