Our winter hiking tips

Discover the loveliest routes in the Prags Valley and the nearby area.

To Lake Prags

Distance: 2.6 km / Altitude difference: 200 m / Level of difficulty: easy

On the other side of the road from the hotel, the route leads over the bridge then follows the marked trail uphill through the forest to a knoll with a view of the lake. From here it heads gently downhill to Lake Prags.

Farm hike – circular hike

Distance: 7.7 km / Altitude difference: 250 m / Level of difficulty: easy

From the hotel, first of all follow the track downhill. Cross over at the bend and take the marked trail over the bridge. Continue through the forest, past Bad Neuprags as far as the road, then continue along the marked track out of the valley alongside the road as far as Schmieden. Just before the church, cross the bridge and follow the side road to the farms. The road leads back into the valley past old farmsteads until just above St. Veit. At the T-junction, turn downhill and towards the Church of St. Veit. Then follow the path back to the hotel.

Säge – Brückele

Distance: 6.7 km / Altitude difference: 290 m / Level of difficulty: easy

In the hamlet of Säge, cross over the road to Plätzwiese and hike along the sunny mountainside, past the historic Bad Altprags, and finally through lovely mountainous forest as far as Brückele.

Brückele – Stolla Valley – Plätzwiese

Distance: 6.4 km / Altitude difference: 510 m / Level of difficulty: moderate

To begin with, follow the road for approx. 500 m and then the signposts for trail no. 18 – the track crosses the road 1x and then passes close by it twice. Where the track next meets the road, follow the signs for Stolla Alp. The route then continues through the snowy landscape as far as the alpine hut, then steeply uphill, eventually rising and falling over the meadows to the Plätzwiese mountain inn.

Plätzwiese – Dürrenstein Hut

Distance: 2.5 km / Altitude difference: 60 m / Level of difficulty: easy

The broad, comfortable hiking trail crosses the Plätzwiese plateau from the Plätzwiese car park. The almost level hiking trail climbs only briefly and gently just before you reach your destination, past the ruined fort to the Dürrenstein Hut.

What do I need?

The right equipment for winter hiking

The advantage of winter hiking is that you do not need any special equipment. However, you should have sturdy, waterproof and cold-resistant footwear and weather-proof and breathable clothing. Of course, you also need gloves and a scarf. To be fully equipped, you should also have a hiking map and remember some sun protection. A rucksack and hiking sticks are already waiting in your room. And to help you grip as you walk on icy paths, we will lend you crampons free of charge.
