Hiking in a white winter landscape

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites

In Prags it doesn’t really make a difference if you are an early riser or if you prefer to sleep in. That’s because there are snowshoe walks for everyone long and short, easy and hard. Many tours lead through secluded, snowy forests, across fields under an untouched covering of snow or past the frozen solid Lake Prags. Of course, a sunrise hike with snowshoes is a genuine highlight – when the sun glides out from behind the mountain summits, the light veil of fog lifts and the peaceful Prags Valley is transformed into a sparkling fairytale land, then you will feel like you are experiencing a true miracle.

Our snowshoe tour tips

Because snowshoeing is a real passion for us and can be enjoyed from right outside the hotel door, we are delighted to introduce you to our favourite routes:

Lake Prags, through the wildly romantic Grünwald Valley

Distance: 4.0 km / Altitude difference: 250 m / Level of difficulty: easy

With your snowshoes on, head through the forest from the hotel to Lake Prags, round the Zipf and along the right-hand shore of the lake, before turning into the Grünwald Valley. During your hike, which, incidentally, is also suitable for beginners, you will have a fantastic view of the Seekofel. The destination of this hike is the lovely Grünwald Alp.

From Brückele to the Ross Alp

Distance: 4.5 km / Altitude difference: 670 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

From your start point of Brückele, follow the snow-covered forest track, which to begin with is flat before climbing steeply uphill to a clearing. From here, to begin with the trail is flat again before it heads steeply uphill again to the beautiful Ross Alp basin and Rossalm Hut. The route may be somewhat strenuous but is very varied.

Brückele – Stolla Alp – Plätzwiese

Distance: 5.0 km / Altitude difference: 500 m / Level of difficulty: easy

This route to Plätzwiese is graced with ancient trees, idyllic forest clearings and angular rock faces. Once you have reached the top, an impressive panorama awaits you – from here you can see absolutely everything! Anyone wishing to climb even higher can continue for another 30 minutes to the Dürrenstein Hut. If the hike is still too short for you, then you can go on for another 45 minutes to the Strudelkopf (2307 metres).

Plätzwiese – Grosse Pyramide

Distance: 4.0 km / Altitude difference: 710 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

Where can you enjoy a fabulous panorama of the Three Peaks, Cristallo group of mountains, Hohe Gaisl, Seekofel and the Tauern group? Here, on the 2,711 m high Grosse Pyramide, also known as Helltal Schlechten! The hike may be strenuous, but the view makes all the effort worthwhile.

Altprags – Putzalm

Distance: 2.5 km / Altitude difference: 350 m / Level of difficulty: easy

The start in Altprags sees the beginning of a moderately challenging snowshoe walk through thick snow-covered, romantic spruce forests. The destination is the Putzalm mountain hut, which, however, is only open in the summer months. Nevertheless, a perfect hike for nature lovers.

Lake Prags – Kaser Hut

Distance: 3.0 km / Altitude difference: 440 m / Level of difficulty: moderately hard

The starting point is once again Lake Prags, whose surface is covered with thick ice in winter. From here, you’ll hike with your snowshoes on through what is at time rugged and untouched nature. The destination of this winter hike is the rustic Kaser Hut.

St. Veit – Wöggen Alp

Distance: 2.0 km / Altitude difference: 300 m / Level of difficulty: easy

Summer and winter alike, the high-altitude trail, which begins very close to the hotel behind the old farms, offers impressive insights and perspectives of Lake Prags, the Seekofel and the entire Prags Valley. The destination of this easy snowshoe walk is Wöggen Alp.
